Why we use White Carbon Black in the daily

White Carbon Black, also known as hydrated silica or light silica, with the chemical name of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), is a white, non-toxic, amorphous nanometer-scale powder. It is named after its white appearance and its ability to serve as a substitute for carbon black.

I. Basic Information

  • Appearance: White powder or granular or irregularly shaped blocks.
  • Chemical Properties: Soluble in caustic alkalis and hydrofluoric acid, insoluble in water, solvents, and acids (except hydrofluoric acid).
  • Physical Properties: High temperature resistance, non-flammable, tasteless, odorless, with excellent electrical insulation.
  • CAS Number: 10279-57-9
  • EINECS Number: 238-878-4

II. Main Components and Structure

The main component of White Carbon Black is silicon dioxide, which can be represented by the formula SiO₂·nH₂O, where nH₂O exists in the form of surface hydroxyl groups. White Carbon Black is a porous substance with a large specific surface area and surface activity.

III. Preparation Methods

The preparation methods of White Carbon Black mainly include gas-phase method, precipitation method, and decomposition method.

  • Gas-phase Method: Using silicon chlorides (such as silicon tetrachloride) as raw materials, White Carbon Black is generated through flame hydrolysis at high temperatures. Gas-phase White Carbon Black has the advantages of small particle size, large specific surface area, and high chemical purity, but the preparation process is complex and the cost is relatively high.
  • Precipitation Method: Silicon dioxide precipitate is generated by reacting sodium silicate with acid, and then White Carbon Black is obtained through filtration, washing, drying, and other processes. The production technology of precipitation White Carbon Black is mature, and the equipment is simple, but the product has low activity and the particles are difficult to control.

IV. Application Areas

White Carbon Black is widely used in various fields due to its unique properties:

  1. Rubber Industry: White Carbon Black is an important reinforcing agent for rubber products, which can improve the strength, wear resistance, tear resistance, and anti-aging properties of rubber products. It is particularly widely used in tire manufacturing, as it can increase tire grip and improve driving safety.
  2. Plastics Industry: As a reinforcing agent and filler, White Carbon Black can significantly improve the strength, hardness, and wear resistance of plastics, and improve the processing performance of plastics.
  3. Coatings Industry: White Carbon Black, as a pigment filler, can improve the covering power, adhesion, and weather resistance of coatings, and reduce coating costs.
  4. Paper Industry: As a high-quality filler, White Carbon Black can improve the whiteness, smoothness, and gloss of paper, and improve the printing performance of paper.
  5. Ceramics Industry: In the production process of ceramic products, White Carbon Black is widely used in the preparation of glazes and bodies, improving the strength, hardness, and wear resistance of ceramic products.
  6. Ink Industry: As a pigment filler, White Carbon Black can improve the covering power, adhesion, and stability of inks, and improve the printing performance of inks.
  7. Cosmetics Industry: White Carbon Black, as a filler and thickening agent, can improve the fineness, stability, and feel of cosmetics, regulate skin oil secretion, and improve skin quality.
  8. Pharmaceutical Industry: White Carbon Black is mainly used in the preparation of pharmaceutical formulations, improving the dispersion, stability, and bioavailability of drugs, and reducing side effects
