Silicon dioxide, commonly known as white carbon black, is an amorphous form of silica. It is a fine grained, white powder with unique physical and chemical properties. Chemically, it is composed mainly of silicon and oxygen atoms, with the chemical formula SiO₂. In terms of production, there are two main methods. The first is the precipitation method, which involves reacting soluble silicate salts, such as sodium silicate, with acids in an aqueous solution. This reaction leads to the formation of amorphous silica particles, which are then processed to obtain silicon dioxide. The second method is the fumed method, where silicon tetrachloride is vaporized and burned in a high temperature flame. The combustion process results in the formation of extremely fine grained silicon dioxide particles with a high degree of purity.
Prominent features of silicon dioxide is its high specific surface area. This property makes it excellent reinforcing agent. In the rubber industry, for example, when added to rubber compounds, silicon dioxide significantly improves the mechanical properties of the rubber. It enhances the tensile strength, tear resistance, and abrasion resistance of rubber products such as tires. The large surface area allows for strong interactions with the rubber molecules, creating a more robust network structure.Silicon dioxide also has good dispersibility. It can be easily dispersed in various media, including polymers, resins, and solvents. In the paint and coating industry, this property is highly valued. When incorporated into paints, silicon dioxide helps to improve the rheological properties, such as viscosity and thixotropy. It prevents pigment settling and improves the flow and leveling of the paint during application, resulting in a smooth and uniform finish.
