Diatomaceous earth powder is a fine grained substance derived from the fossilized remains of diatoms, which are single celled algae. These diatoms have intricate cell walls made of silica (SiO₂). Over time, as diatoms die and accumulate at the bottom of bodies of water such as lakes and oceans, their remains form thick deposits. Through geological processes, these deposits are compressed and eventually mined to obtain diatomaceous earth, which is then ground into powder.
